Awakening a Giant

“There’s a Sucker Born Every Minute: Re-creating the Cardiff Giant” was a project by Syracuse Artist Ty Marshal which re-created the Cardiff Giant according to the original size specifications. Ty used Hypertufa, a mix of Portland cement, peat moss, and perlite (which creates a “lighter concrete” that can withstand harsh weather conditions). The project’s focus defined a lineage to Central New York’s history as a creative community, how religious fundamentalism has affected modern culture in Upstate New York and throughout the nation, and the origin of arts and entertainment (notably “pop culture”) in the United States, and how arts and culture serves as an economic engine.

It is with deep gratitude that I wish to express my thanks to all of the organizations, businesses and individuals who partnered, sponsored and volunteered on the Cardiff Giant project: “There’s a Sucker Born Every Minute: Re-creating the Cardiff Giant”. The support of the Onondaga Historical Association, The Gifford Foundation, The Central New York Community Foundation and the Reisman Foundation shows the strength of partnership and collaboration in our community. Maarten Jacobs from The Near Westside Initiative, Isaac Rothwell and the members of The Westside Arts Council (WAC) and Rick Destito and Dennis Earle with the members of Stewards of Lipe Art Park (SLAP) are dedicated individuals working hard on the revitalization efforts in the Near Westside Neighborhood and were extremely gracious in unearthing our “Giant” in Lipe Art Park. The support from Christopher DeCourse and the Department of Anthropology at SU’s Maxwell School also helped make this project truly come alive! The Village of Homer, NY and the Homer Center for the Arts turned this local project into one of regional collaboration.

The City of Syracuse and the Syracuse Police Department were especially helpful in bringing this project to The Atrium at City Hall Commons – as well as offering assistance in ironing out all the details with a project of this size. Special thanks to Mayor Stephanie Miner, Legislator Tom Buckel, Seargent Naylor, Jim Gaffey, and the many staff members for their time and effort. Also, the crew at The Atrium were extremely accommodating – thanks to Kevin, Jimmy and John for being there from day to day to make sure everything ran smoothly.
Our local businesses who collaborated on this project show the importance of supporting our local economy. Many thanks to BC Restaurant, Syracuse Soapworks, King Weasel Custom Buttons and Screenprinting, Speach’s Family Candy Shoppe, The Kind Coffee Company, Lakeland Winery, Organically Hip, Sparkytown and Scolaro, Shulman, Cohen, Fetter and Burstein for their products and donations. Many thanks to our local journalists and photographers working with The Syracuse Post Standard, The Syracuse NewTimes and The Eagle Newspapers and The Daily Orange, and The Huffington Post for their coverage of the events leading up to and throughout the project.
I am deeply grateful for the 40+ hands-on volunteers who helped throughout the exhibition – gallery attending, digging, lifting, moving, setting up and breaking down takes a lot of effort, and you made it happen with ease. Lastly, this project would not have been nearly as successful without the 117 Kickstarter backers who donated funds to make this all possible. My express thanks go to Nancy Keefe-Rhodes and Kathryn Petrillo for their advice, critiques and guidance throughout the planning, building, organizing and presentation of “Old Hoaxey”. Thank you.
The degree of partnership, collaboration and support that this project has highlighted in our community is inspiring to say the least. As we continue to thrive in our regional revitalization efforts, it is my hope that “The Greatest Hoax in US History” the Cardiff Giant will remind us to carry on the tradition of innovation, creativity and community partnership that has existed in Central New York since our earliest beginnings. To see the faces of the children and the “children at heart” who were there to celebrate this unique piece of Central New York history is the most rewarding experience an artist could ever receive.
With appreciation,
Ty Marshal
